Our Program

Cadets participate in exciting and challenging activities that you can’t experience anywhere else. The Cadet Program provides opportunities for youth to gain valuable knowledge and skills that build confidence and help pave the way in a transition to adulthood. Cadets engage in varied and unique experiences, while developing competencies in leadership, citizenship, and physical and mental fitness.

Becoming a Cadet not only allows you to get unique experiences, but become a part of a network of over 50,000 cadets across the country!

We meet every Wednesday from 6:30 - 9:15 PM at HMCS Discovery in Stanley Park during the school year. (We follow the VSB School Calendar for holidays)

Along with regular training each Wednesday, there are a variety of other additional activities that cadets can be a part of during the week along with extra weekend activities.

FAQs

  • There is no cost to join the cadet program. We are funded by the Department of National Defense in partnership with the registered non-profit, The Navy League of Canada. While there is no cost to join, the Greater Vancouver Branch of the Navy League of Canada asks that each family make a small annual membership donation to support extra cadet activities not funded by DND. This is not a requirement to participate but all cadets/families are encouraged to support the Branch in this way or be active participants in volunteering and fundraising.

  • As a cadet you are not a member of the Canadian Armed Forces, and you are not expected to join the military. While you are introduced to Sea, Army or Air activities of the Canadian Armed Forces (CAF) and certain traditions, you are also introduced to many other career options outside of the CAF.

  • Cadets are supervised, administered, and trained by Cadet Instructor Cadre officers and non-commissioned members of a sub-component of the Reserve Force of the Canadian Armed Forces who, by the terms of their enrolment or transfer, have undertaken as their primary duty the safety, supervision, administration, and training of Cadets. They go through extensive background checks to ensure suitability to work with the program.

CIC Officers receive special training to assist them in their duties in planning and administering the cadet program. Extensive planning and risk mitigation is done to ensure that cadets participate in safe and fun activities.

  • There is no mandatory time commitment to be a part of the Cadet Program. Cadets are expected to attend cadet activities regularly and be active participants in the program however we understand that they may be balancing schoolwork and other extracurricular activities. Cadets will never be penalized for missing a cadet activity.

Cadets get out of the program what they put in. Many of our most successful cadets were active participants in the program and have gone on to lead amazing civilian careers and receive scholarships to assist with their post secondary education.
